Colorado

  • Attorney General Phil Weiser announced a settlement with Baron Property Services. The matter, brought under the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, Colo. Rev. Stat. § 6-1-101 et seq., and related Colorado landlord-tenant laws, targets alleged unfair and deceptive rental practices, including improper fees and charges imposed on renters. The settlement requires Baron Property Services to pay $7,300 in restitution to tenants who were charged improperly, and $67,635 to the state.

Multistate

  • A coalition of 17 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), alleging violations of federal law after the agency repealed stricter limits on mercury and other hazardous air pollutant emissions from coal-fired and oil-fired power plants that were previously outlined in the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) Rule. The coalition seeks injunctive relief to reinstate the updated emissions standards, arguing that the EPA’s action endangers public health and the environment and failed to consider advances in emissions control technologies.

Multistate

  • A multistate coalition of 24 state Attorneys General filed an amicus brief urging the D.C. Circuit Court to permit EPA to rescind up to $20 billion in grants issued under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. Amici argue that the Biden-era program was “unlawfully structured, riddled with waste and conflicts of interest, and intentionally designed to evade oversight.”

Alabama

  • Attorney General Marshall settled a lawsuit with Cullman Clinic and its administrator for allegedly administering dangerous, unapproved weight-loss drugs to patients in violation of the Alabama Deceptive Trade Practices Act (§ 8-19-1 et seq.). Under the settlement, the clinic must halt the use of unapproved drugs, pay $75,000 in restitution and penalties, and implement enhanced patient safety protocols.

Hosted by the university’s Law & Economics Center, the symposium brings together judges, scholars, and practitioners to address pressing civil justice issues such as third-party litigation financing; the evolving role of judges in expert testimony admission; recent developments in consumer protection; the latest “super torts;” and assessing multi-district litigation, class actions, and mass arbitrations.

Multistate

  • A bipartisan coalition of 42 attorneys general sent a letter to the House Committee on Financial Services and the Senate Banking Committee regarding the Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act of 2025 (H.R. 2808 and S. 1467). The letter urges Congress to pass this legislation to end the abusive use of mortgage credit triggers and seeks to preserve the use of mortgage credit to narrowly defined, consumer consented circumstances.
  • A coalition of 8 attorneys general announced a contempt order was filed against John Spiller, owner of Rising Eagle Capital Group, JSquared Telecom, and Rising Eagle Capital Group-Cayman, which offered robocall dialer and VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol ) services to telemarketers. Spiller allegedly helped facilitate large volumes of robocalls, including many targeting numbers on the Do Not Call Registry, through his telemarketing service companies. Spiller is required to pay $600,000 in attorney’s fees and litigation costs for violating a 2023 court order that barred him from placing or facilitating robocalls.
